"Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Establish your priorities and go to work."
-H. L. Hunt
How often have your clients heard they have to restrict their carbs if they want to lose weight and keep it off? There are a million of these old ways of thinking and "diet hacks." Too often, online fitness coaches also subscribe to these ancient ways of thinking.
You tell your clients to do these workouts, not those. Don't eat those foods, but feel free to eat these. It's the same song and dance. You're doing the same things as the majority of other fitness coaches. Yet, you expect to scale your business and work with amazing clients. How's that going to happen exactly?
To win in this competitive fitness industry, you have to position yourself like a boss. What does that mean? Sir Richard Branson has a theory known as the "blue ocean vs. red ocean."
Here's the breakdown:
Red Ocean: has many competitors, minimal market share available, and is extremely cutthroat.
Blue Ocean: very little competition, plenty of market share available, very few rules exist because few people are in this arena.
Your goal should be to position yourself uniquely compared to your competitors. How can you stand out? Offer more value to your ideal clients? Be seen as a thought-leader and game-changer in the fitness industry? How can you swim in the blue ocean?
Yes, carbs matter. Several older nutrition and exercise regimens are still valid to this day, and some stuff is simply timeless.
But, wouldn't you rather be counting cash as your ideal clients are fighting each other, gladiator-style, so they can work with you?
Ok, maybe I'm getting carried away with the gladiator stuff. Seriously, though. Break free from these chains of ancient marketing. If you want to count cash, you have to stand out from the crowd. And talking about carbs is the fastest way to vanilla marketing and no cash in your pocket.
Narrow down your niche so that you can be laser-focused and specialized. You only want to work with the most committed and highest-quality clients.
(Who do you pay more, a specialized endocrinologist or a family doctor?
Exactly. The specialized doctor always wins. As the old saying goes, “the riches are in the niches.”)
The same goes with dating. Do you want to date everybody out there that happens to be single? I hope not. No, you want to date the person that aligns the best with your values and fits what you’re looking for in a partner. There’s tremendous value in that type of relationship.
The instructor and client partnership are no different.
In this relationship, you’ll scale your business.
Serve your ideal clients in the most impactful ways possible.
And count cash along the way.
